Before you apply to graduate school in science or engineering, itââ¬â¢s important to take a moment to ask yourself WHY. Many people apply to STEM grad programs because they were excellent students through their undergraduate education, not realizing that graduate school is a very different beast. If you are excited about a PhD because you were a good undergrad student and arenââ¬â¢t sure what you want to do next, think carefully about whether a PhD is right for you. While you (may) find the jobs you are qualified for after a PhD more satisfying, and they may be better compensated, remember that you will first spend 4-5 years (or more, if you choose to pursue a postdoc!) making a stipend that covers the cost of living, but not much else. For context, PhD candidatesââ¬â¢ salaries are typically in the high $20K to low $30K range per year, depending on if youââ¬â¢re in science (lower) or engineering (higher) and the cost of living where your school is located. Now, if youââ¬â¢re still thinking about it, here are a few reasons pursuing a PhD might be a great fit for you: You enjoy working independently on problems that nobody has solved before In graduate school, you are, by definition, working on problems that nobody has solved before. That means that youââ¬â¢re responsible for both thinking about your work at a high level (how is this work interesting and important? What is the motivation for what Iââ¬â¢m doing?) as well as proposing and developing solutions to technical challenges. NOBODY will give you a detailed description of exactly what you should be developing: YOU are in charge of both setting the goalposts appropriately AND reaching those goals. You hope to pursue a career as a researcher employed at a government laboratory (NIH, one of the national labs or defense labs) Many of these researcher positions are available only to people with PhDs, and the kinds of projects they work on range from basic science to applied research and engineering. You want to be a professor Some people think the only career option open to PhD graduates is to become a professor, which is not true! However, a PhD IS needed to become a professor. Some people choose to work at an undergraduate-only institution, where they can be more focused on teaching students, while others go to big research universities where they are expected to write grants to bring in funding for research, conduct research alongside graduate students and postdocs, as well as teach undergraduate and graduate-level courses. From my observations I noted the serious way in which clan members treat their official matches and relationships with other clan members. I had expected to find a lot of childish disrespect and bickering. The reason I thought that was because I assumed that because they dont have face to fa ce contact with any other gamers and there are no real life consequences to insulting another gamer they wouldnt be worried about saving face or hurting others feelings. The contrary turned out to be true, especially in the communication between serious gamers. They treat each other with a great deal of respect and follow what appear to be a quiet a few unwritten rules of conduct in and out of the game server. A great example of this comes up in the actual gameplay, serious players will avoid spamming or continuously firing an automatic fire weapon in the game in hopes of fragging someone out of what they consider luck. In the year 1996, above 250, 00 older Australians suffered from fractured hips. More than 80 percent of the cases of hip fractures are linked with falls (Simpson et al., 2013). The rate of mortality because of falls is increasing considerably with the progression of age in both the sexes as well in all the ethnic and racial groups. After the implementation of the program, feedback will be taken from the elderly patients as well as the nurses to know the advantages or disadvantages of this program. The feedback of the nursing professionals as well as the elderly patients in the geriatric wards will let us know whether the program has been successful after its execution as well as implementation. As this problem is increasing on a daily basis, hence there is a need to develop some strategies or frameworks, which will address fall prevention of the elderly in the geriatric wards. The team members will reach consensus with respect to the following questions: Which of the practices of fall prevention should be utilized? Which of the universal fall precautions should be applied in the geriatric wards? How the identified factors of risk should be used for the planning of fall prevention care? How should the nursing professionals review and manage the patients after a fall? How can the hospitals include these practices into the program of fall prevention? A survey will be performed for collecting the data in which the participants will be elderly individuals and nursing professionals. They will be asked question like what is the most important cause of falls, what are the challenges faced by the nursing professionals in providing treatment along with care to the elderly patients. This survey will help us in knowing what all strategies needs to be developed in order to provide appropriate treatment and care to the elderly patients in the geriatric ward. The implementation of fall prevention activity will be carried out in different steps: Standardized evaluation of the risk factors of fall Scheduled protocols, together with the universal fall precautions Interventions and planning of care that will deal with the identified factors of risk within the overall plan of care of the patients Post-fall procedures along with a root cause investigation and clinical review. For implementing the plan, an appropriate improvement approach such as Plan-Do-Study-Act (PDSA) will be used. It is used for improving a process or carrying out a change. This approach involves a series of systematic steps in order to valuable learning and knowledge for the continual improvement of a process (Taylor et al., 2014). This project will use this improvement approach. It will include the nursing professionals and the nurses, who will provide a feedback what the project has achieved until date and what it did not? The elderly patients in the geriatric ward of the hospitals will define the quality of the improvement regarding the quality improvement with respect to fall prevention. It will also identify the problem areas and will focus on further improvement in the quality of this project, which aims to address the issue of fall prevention of the elderly patients in the geriatric wards. The practices will be tailored to the healthcare organization. Additionally, the unit level, all these components will be covered in a manner modified to the patient-types and the flow of care on each unit. The program is likely to be implemented successfully and it will be continued when it will be compatible with the priorities of the hospital and for providing the best care to the elderly patients. The unit team members comprising of the staff members will provide direct care to the elderly patients in the geriatric wards on a daily basis by assessing fall risk, planning care for preventing falls and ascertaining that the care of the elderly patients is performed in an appropriate manner and is well documented. The unit team and implementation team will develop a process for constantly monitoring the alterations in the rate of falls and process of care for preventing falls in the elderly patients in the geriatric wards. Feedback will be taken from the staff, patients and clinicians. The unit team will compile questions as well as problems from the members of the staff for sending back to the implementation team. Additionally, the process of monitoring will comprise tracking the changes in the rate of falls and processes of care for preventing falls and the results will be communication to the implementation team and the staff. Cliques are small enough that the members feel that they know each other better than do people outside the clique. Members of a clique share common activities and friendships. They are social settings in which adolescents hang out, talk to each other, and form closer friendships. Groups of friends, called cliques can be important for social upgrading, but in most cases the enormous power and effects of these cliques can create alienation, exclusion , and destructive results. In my high school , as well as every other high school in America there are social groups of individuals, called cliques , that effect every individual whether they are an insider or an outsider. Generally there are the cool cliques , the athletic cliques, the freak clique, the skater clique, the smart clique, and the average clique. Almost everyone finds their place in one of these cliques, but there are always a few outsiders who go through high school never knowing where they belong. these are the people who are constantly ridiculed, picked on , and talked about day in and day out. The effects can be devastating, even deadly. In Littleton, Coloraldo two outcast teenagers came into school one day and began shooting, targeting the athletes and other students who had made their lives awful by ridiculing them constantly. Seniors Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold stormed their suburban Denver school with guns and bombs last April 20, killing 12 students and a teacher before taking their own lives(Kenworthy 1). Augustana University education professor Larry Brendtro explained kids who feel powerless and rejected are capable of doing horrible things(Cohen 4). A high school student, Jason Sanchez understands why the two outsider snapped by saying If you go to school, and you dont have friends, it drives you to insanity(Cohen 4). So what do these lonely outcast kids do if they are rejected by everyone? Roger Rosenblatt discusses in his article, Welcome to the Works of the Trench Coat , how kids will discover self-worth by hating an enemy(Rosenblatt 1). The kids of Columbine for example look alike; they conceal differences. People who are attracted to clans and cults seek to lose their individuality and discover power and pride in a group. As individuals , the killers Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold, were vulnerable, taunted by the other tribes in school the cliques, the athletes as geeks and nerds(Rosenblatt 1). The end result as a young girl involved in the murders reported was , He just put a gun to my head, and he started laughing and saying it was all because people were mean to him last year(Rosenblatt 1). The social warfare of cliques has no limits or boundaries; anything can and will happen. Columbine High School is only one example of how high school cliques can be damaging to teenagers. At Glen Ridge High School a group of jocks raped a retarded woman. In that attractive upper-middle-class New Jersey suburb, thirteen jocks were present in the basement where the young womans body was penetrated by a baseball bat and a broomstick. The country was sickened by the inhumanity of a bunch of guys who were among the most admired and envied young men in their community and high school (Lefkowitz 653). These star athletes were not even afraid of being punished. They told their friends and schoolmates of the incident not trying to hide it at all. Athletes are treated as kings of the school. This is not only true for the athletes , but for the cheerleaders too. In the article by Adam Cohen he says While others plod through high school, they glide: their exploits celebrated in the pep rallies and recorded in the school paper and trophy cases(Cohen 2). Another high school student Blake McConnell says that The jocks and the cheerleaders have the most clout, they get out of punishment even with the police.
